Not All Green Maid Services Are The Same

What you need to know before hiring a “green” cleaning service

It took a while for people to start caring about the planet.  Growing up we didn’t care what goes inside products before purchasing or consuming them. Fossil fuels and petroleum products were utilized to the point of squander—habits being blamed for global warming today.

However, a lesson was learned along the way, and now people are more concerned about the environment. Going green is not merely a trend, but already a way of life for many.

Whether committed to reducing your carbon footprint or just looking for different ways to live healthier, changing how your home is cleaned is a major step in the right direction.  However, before choosing a Green Maid Service you need to ask an important question.  How “Green” are the products they use?

Green Maid Service Products

WHAT ARE “GREEN” PRODUCTS?

Products and services with the label “Eco-friendly” or “Green” are considered to be safe for the environment, allowing for economic advancement while prioritizing the stability for future generations. These products should not be detrimental to the environment or the health of people using them.

The main issue is many products marketed as eco-friendly take advantage of a loosely regulated industry. Some omit key information in their ingredients to hide the fact they are using some potential threats to our surrounding.  Did you know if a manufacturer simply uses recycled material in the container for their product they can label it “Eco-Friendly”?  (ref link)

hazardous cleaning products

For any cleaning service, it is important to note house cleaning products are often formulated with chemicals that can harm the environment. Some conventional cleaning products can trigger various health concerns like asthma, allergies, autism, ADHD and even cancer. These products are doubly dangerous because many of them do not list their ingredients. The National Capital Poison Center ranks home cleaning products as second most common poison exposure.  If you could remove those hazards from your home without sacrificing quality, wouldn’t you?

A truly Green maid service should use products living up to the promise of providing you a spotless and safe home without harmful chemicals. This is why we want to help you by comparing differences between some traditional brands, and a few not so “Green” products. We hope to inform you of the true eco-friendly products, so you may identify for yourself whether you are getting the green cleaning service that you want and deserve.

ALL-PURPOSE CLEANERS

The most important cleaner in your home as likely the most used, all-purpose cleaners should be free of hazardous materials. At Clean Elegance we use a certified eco-friendly all-purpose cleaner that outperforms even the most expensive conventional cleaner. Our product can handle tough stains and dirt on virtually every area of a home.

100% Plant-Derived All Purpose CleanerOur product is the best companion to a green house cleaning, with no harsh chemicals or artificial ingredients. It is 100% plant-derived and therefore 100% biodegradable.  When testing Green products for use in our business, this product truly amazed us with its performance.  It has absolutely zero toxic ingredients and even if ingested there is no level of toxicity associated with the product.

This is all in contrast to all-purpose cleaners that contain often ineffective and toxic ingredients, like Dyes, Chlorine Bleach, Ammonia, Animal products and more. For example, Simple Green all-purpose cleaner is marketed as “Non-Toxic” but contains butoxyethanol, which absorbs through the skin, irritates the eyes and may damage red blood cells.

GLASS CLEANERS

Growing up there was only one glass cleaner used in our home, Windex.  Can a “Green” product produce a similar, quality streak-free window cleaning?  Clean Elegance researched many eco-friendly glass cleaner products to discover it is possible. Our cleaner is a plant-derived surfactant that is a mix of water, denatured alcohol, vinegar, plant-based surfactant, and olive oil. An all natural product, unbeaten in our testing and proven effectiveness in cleaning windows, mirrors and glass. It outperforms even traditional products and does not leave streaks or film on the surface.

In fairness, popular glass cleaner Windex was reformulated in 2015 to remove ammonia, definitely a step in the right direction.  Overall the formula is less hazardous but still some ingredients may cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory system.

WOOD POLISHES

The Clean Elegance wood polish is hypoallergenic, proven safe on painted surfaces and a great conditioner for stainless steel.  Its composition includes olive oil,Eco-Friendly All Natural Products essential oils (lemon and citrus) and distilled white vinegar. It can be applied to wood and furniture, floors, cabinet, painted and stainless steel surfaces. In addition to a smudge-free surface, the natural fragrance leaves surfaces smelling fresh.

Before going green we used several traditional wood polishes around the home. Once we reviewed the ingredients from different brands, it was alarming what we’ve been exposing ourselves to over the years.  Many brands contain petroleum distillates which are nerve-damaging, not to mention highly flammable.  One product even contained formaldehyde, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies as a human carcinogen.

POWDER CLEANSERS

Many scouring powders contain chlorine bleach which may irritate skin or eyes and forms a dangerous gas if mixed with other cleaning products containing ammonia or certain acids.  The Environmental Working Group has placed Comet in the household cleaner “Hall of Shame” citing their air pollution test;

“..emitted 146 different chemicals, including some that have been linked to cancer, asthma and reproductive disorders. The most toxic chemicals detected – formaldehyde, benzene, chloroform and toluene – are not listed on the label.”

Clean Elegance uses a powder cleanser that has an A+ rating with EWG, although has not yet been Green Certified.  It does not contain any chlorine or ammonia, only 5 simple all natural ingredients: Limestone, feldspar, Alkyl polyglucoside (biodegradable cleaning agent derived from sugars), Soda ash and Baking soda.  Although this product is all natural, we are reviewing an alternative powder cleanser which has already obtained green certification and may substitute depending on performance.
